Neon

Located at Group 18 and Period 2 of the Periodic Table is the gas that makes the signboards so colorful. This is Neon.

First discovered by William Ramsay and Morris Travers. First isolated also by William Ramsay and Morris Travers,

Neon is a Noble Gas that is used in lights to make lights more colorful.

How element got it's name
The name neon comes from the Greek word "neos" which means "new".

Uses
Neon is used in vacuum tubes, high-voltage indicators, lightning arresters, wavemeter tubes, television tubes, and helium–neon lasers. Liquefied neon is commercially used as a cryogenic refrigerant in applications not requiring the lower temperature range attainable with more extreme liquid-helium refrigeration.
